Yusuf EnglishHARTSVILLE, S.C. – Hartsville High School has named Yusuf English, who has coached at Denmark-Olar High School in Bamberg County for the past three years, to lead the Red Fox boys’ varsity basketball program.

English is a 2005 graduate of Allen University with a Bachelor of Arts in English. He will also teach in the English department at Hartsville High School.

Coach English led the Denmark-Olar Vikings to a 22-5 record and the Region 5-A championship in 2015-16. His overall record at Denmark-Olar was 46-25, and the Vikings have a 25-5 three-year region record under English’s guidance. Coach English also worked as an assistant basketball coach at Allen University and Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School.

Coach Phyllis Griggs, Hartsville High School athletic director, praised English’s passion and outlook for coaching student-athletes.

“The passion that Coach English has for the game and the love he has for his players was evident when we met,” Griggs said. “I felt from the very beginning that we were on the same page philosophically, and he will be a good fit with our Red Fox coaching staff. We have had great coaches on our staff before, but one piece we have been missing is for our head basketball coach to be on our campus every day.”

Dr. Charlie Burry, principal of Hartsville High School, said English’s experiences will prove valuable inside and outside of the classroom.

“Coach English was extremely well-prepared for his interview, and I believe that is reflective of his coaching philosophy,” Burry said. “His teams will also play hard, be disciplined and fundamentally sound, and his players will contribute positively to our school climate. It was of great importance to me that his references spoke highly of him as an English teacher as well as a basketball coach. I believe that Coach English will be a dynamic addition to our faculty as well as our athletic department.”
