Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology holds groundbreaking for gym renovation
DARLINGTON, S.C. – Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Friday to commemorate the launch of an approximately $2 million renovation to the school’s gymnasium.
The project is expected to be completed by Sept. 1, and will include a complete renovation of existing gymnasium facilities and construction of a new state-of-the-art, 4,000-square-foot activity conference center.
“I am very excited about the project for gym renovation at Mayo High School,” said Dr. Eddie Ingram, superintendent of Darlington County School District. “It is an ambitious, well-designed project that will serve Mayo, its students and our community for many years to come. I want to thank the Darlington County Board of Education for its visionary leadership and commitment to not just this project but all of the projects, academic and otherwise, that make the DCSD a very special place to be.”
Mayo High Principal Arlene Wallace spoke during the ceremony to a group of students, administrators, project managers and community members.
“This is a joyous occasion, especially for the many of us here who have been personally involved in conceptualizing and shaping the renovation and new addition,” Wallace said. “The project that we are celebrating today has required leadership, foresight, careful planning and financial support. For that we thank Dr. Eddie Ingram, our district superintendent, and the Darlington County Board of Education. We are so excited for this renovation and new addition for the students, staff and community of Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology.”
Following renovations, the gymnasium will feature new flooring, paint, locker rooms, stage, lobby, ceilings, restrooms, fire alarm and sprinkler systems, basketball goals, air conditioning and heating, and bleachers.
Robert Goodson Architects of Hartsville designed the project. The construction contractor is BPM Construction out of Charlotte, and local subcontractors include Gardner Roofing, Kelly’s Electrical, Johnson’s Refrigeration and Rivers Plumbing and Electric.
The renovation project will be funded by the Darlington County School District through a general obligation bond.
