School Board Approves 2011-12 Calendar
(DARLINGTON) – The Darlington County Board of Education approved the 2011-12 school district calendar at their December board meeting. The first day of class for the 2011-12 school year will be August 15 and the last day will be May 24. Teachers will start on August 8, 2011. The calendar was developed by a committee of parents, students, community members, teachers, administrators, and district staff, who sifted through the numerous requirements and requests to shape and refine the final calendar.
This calendar meets the following needs/requirements:
• 180 student days (required by law)
• 10 professional development days (required by law)
• Professional development days that fall on Friday
• 5 days of professional development at the beginning of the year to provide adequate time to prepare for the school year
• The first day of school is a Monday
• One day of professional development at the end of the year for teachers to close out the grades.
One change from recent years is the placement of Spring Break. The High School Exit Exam will take place April 17-19. These dates are set by the state and the district has no control over these testing dates. If Spring Break were held the week after Easter as it has been in the past, there would be only one day for students to review and administrators to prepare testing materials before the test is administered. By moving Spring Break to the week before Easter, school administrators and testing coordinators will have more time to receive, check and prepare testing materials and students will have more time to review.
The inclement weather make-up days for 2011-12 are February 10, March 16, and May 25.
