North Industrial Machine named 2017 Jimmy Newsom Signature Award winnerDARLINGTON, S.C. – The Darlington County School District (DCSD) Teacher Forum presented North Industrial Machine with the 2017 Jimmy Newsom Signature Award last week during the organization’s annual Education Forum held at Darlington Country Club.

Named in honor of former DCSD Superintendent Jimmy Newsom, the award is presented annually to an individual, group or business selected by the Teacher Forum for having made a significant contribution to education in Darlington County.

“North Industrial Machine and all of their hardworking employees are helping to educate and train students in Darlington County to become productive citizens,” said Dr. Bill Boyd, DCSD’s acting superintendent. “They have worked extensively during the past year to strengthen our programs at the Darlington County Institute of Technology (DCIT), a school that serves students districtwide. We are very thankful to have them in our community.”

North Industrial Machine Vice President Danny Johnson Jr. serves as a member of the Superintendent's Business Cabinet, the Community Shareholders Committee, DCIT’s Machine Tool Advisory Committee, and as a staunch business advisor and partner.

When DCIT was preparing to purchase some new equipment for machine tool students, Johnson offered to review the equipment and help in any way possible. Johnson offered several suggestions about the type of machines he believed would be most beneficial to train students. His advice, along with his assistance in securing the machines and a substantial monetary donation by North Industrial Machine, helped DCIT purchase six new milling machines instead of the originally planned two or three.

In the past year, North Industrial Machine hired five DCIT students for paid apprenticeships. They plan to hire more soon. The students are earning real-world experience and guidance in machine tool, welding and engineering, while getting paid and attending school.

DCIT does not have its own forklift, so North Industrial Machine stepped in last year with a loaner for several months to help with some large deliveries.

“I just want to say thank you to all of the teachers of Darlington County,” Johnson said while accepting the award. “All of our Board of Directors, they’re all graduates of the Darlington County school system. So, you guys mean a lot to us, and we just want to let you know that. We are honored to accept this award.”

Previous Jimmy Newsom Signature Award honorees include Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Duke Energy, S.C. Speaker of the House Jay Lucas and former DCSD Superintendent Dr. Rainey Knight.
