Dear DCSD Family,

First of all, I pray you and your families are well and safe during these difficult times. Thank you for all you and your family are doing to continue the learning in your household.

I wanted to take the opportunity to update you on many vital issues in our district. Also, Dr. Newman, our superintendent, hosts a weekly Facebook LIVE session at 9 AM on Fridays. I’ve included the information from this Friday’s Facebook LIVE, and you can view his LIVE sessions on our website under the Coronavirus button.

GRADING AND REPORT CARDS
Third-quarter grades are now ready! We calculated our third quarter grades based on assignments given before March 16. Due to reduced staffing and concerns about the virus, we will not be sending out paper report cards. Instead, you can view your child’s grades by signing onto ParentPortal. Parents who want a hard copy should contact their child’s principal.

We have continued to tweak our eLearning model. Beginning this week, our teachers will provide lessons in 2-week blocks, and Fridays will be R3 days. R3 days, which stands for Reteach, Review, and Related Arts, are for students to catch up on their work and review areas that are giving them trouble. If they have completed their work, they are encouraged to do one of the Related Arts classes that will be available. We will also continue to allow students the five days make up throughout the calendar. A calendar marking the R3 days will be sent out shortly.

The State has waived attendance, so we will grade on completion of work, not on times logged into the system. Grades will be based on two categories: Classwork-80% and Assessments-20%. Just as in regular classes, students must complete their schoolwork to pass, and the work will be assessed. If students do not turn in their work, they may receive a zero or incomplete until the work is completed.

Teachers will be entering grades, and you will be able to monitor grades in ParentPortal, as always. Please give the teachers a little grace, however, as they work to enter grades under the new grading system.

We are planning for the remainder of the school year, regardless of whether we will physically be in school or not. For students in grades K-11, the last day for assignments will be May 28 and June 2 will be the last day work can be submitted.

EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION
Our special needs students should be receiving services via email, phone, and Zoom. Please reach out to your child's teachers and principals for specific questions about your child.

SENIORS
High school main courses such as government and economics that change at the fourth quarter will be scheduled by the individual high schools. Seniors’ last day for assignments will be May 14, with May 19 being the last day work can be submitted. Senior GPAs will be calculated with all grades turned in by May 19. This GPA will be used to determine Valedictorian, Salutatorian, scholarships, etc.

EVENTS
We will close for Spring Break from April 10-April 19. No assignments will be given and no work will be due during this time. Please note that the DCSD technology and instructional helpline will not be manned during Spring Break. We will provide food for our students during Spring Break, just as we have done for the past few weeks. Students can pick up food bags for the entire week at the regular locations on Monday, April 13.

We have received many, many questions about proms and graduations. Right now, proms and graduations are postponed, not canceled. We remain hopeful that we will be able to provide these experiences for our seniors, even if they are held later in the summer.

INTERNET ACCESS
Constant internet access is not necessary to complete the schoolwork. Students need to access Wi-Fi for short periods (15 minutes or so) every few days to upload completed work and download new assignments to be completed offline. Students who do not have internet access at home can access the Wi-Fi in any DCSD school parking lot. Once in the parking lot, iPads and Macbooks issued by the district will link to the Wi-Fi. If you run into problems, please contact your child’s principal or teacher.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
• If you ordered and paid for a class ring, yearbook, or fundraising goodies, you will receive them. The delivery is dependent upon the company and may be delayed but, when they arrive, we will arrange for safe pickup.
• We are planning to hold an online 4K registration on May 1-10. More information will be coming out as we get closer.
• We know many people paid for field trips. Right now, all field trips have been delayed, not canceled. We remain hopeful that we will be able to send our students on the field trips before the end of the year. If that is not possible, we will contact parents about refunds.
• Several people have asked if students will need to make up this time. It is our view that we are currently in school, though we may not be in the buildings. Teachers, students, and families are putting in a tremendous amount of work to continue the learning at home. We expect to count this time as school days and finish our school year as scheduled in the first week of June.

All of you – students, parents, teachers, and staff – have been putting forth tremendous effort. We are incredibly proud of the work that has been accomplished, and we are grateful for all our families have done to support this eLearning process. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Audrey Childers
Public Information Officer
