In November of 1988, all Darlington County Schools were surveyed for asbestos to comply with new federal regulations associated with asbestos in schools.
This law is commonly referred to as AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act) and was passed by Congress in 1986.
This law required that each school be tested to determine specific asbestos levels at that school. An Asbestos Management Plan was then developed for each school based on asbestos that was found. The management plan discusses specific test results, locations of asbestos, asbestos that has been removed, and the results of all re-inspections. A copy of these plans are available at each school and at the district operations office.
The federal law also requires us to re-inspect every school on a 3-year basis. The 3-year re-inspection is being conducted now and will finish in the next few weeks. In addition, we are required to notify all employees, PTO/PTA Presidents, and School Advisory Councils on an annual basis to make them aware of the AHERA program and the location of the specific management plans for each school.
